The calculator uses the follower-based formula most tools and brands use: engagement rate = (average likes + comments + saves + shares per post) / followers x 100. Enter averages from your last 10 to 20 posts for a stable number; a single viral or flopped post will distort a smaller sample.
Your result is rated against published Instagram benchmark bands: under 1% reads low, around 1% to 3% is the broad average range most accounts land in, 3% to 6% is good, and above 6% is excellent. These bands come from public industry benchmark reports, not from our own measurements, and real expectations shift by niche and account size.
Saves and shares are optional inputs because Instagram only shows them to the account owner. Including them raises your rate slightly and gives a more complete picture; leaving them out keeps your number comparable with tools that only count likes and comments.
Bigger accounts almost always show lower percentage rates: reach grows faster than the core audience that interacts. That is why a 100k-follower account at 2% can be performing better than a 5k account at 4%, and why you should compare against accounts of similar size in your niche.
