The calculator uses the subscriber-based formula: engagement rate = (average likes + comments per video) / subscribers x 100. Average your last 10 to 20 uploads of the same format; long-form videos and Shorts behave so differently that mixing them produces a meaningless number.
Your result is rated against published YouTube benchmark bands: under 1% reads low, roughly 1% to 4% covers the average-to-good range, and above 4% is strong, with above 8% excellent. These bands come from public industry benchmark reports, not from our own measurements.
YouTube does not expose shares or watch time publicly, so the calculator counts likes and comments, the two engagement signals visible on every video. Watch time and click-through rate matter more to YouTube's recommendations, but they are only visible to the channel owner in Studio.
Subscriber-based rates understate channels with heavy search or recommendation traffic, where most viewers are not subscribed. If that is your channel, also compute the views-based variant (likes plus comments divided by views); around 4% to 5% of viewers engaging is commonly cited as healthy.
