Explore ServicesHow the Instagram engagement rate is calculated
The calculator uses the follower-based formula most tools and brands use: engagement rate = (average likes + comments + saves + shares per post) / followers x 100. Enter averages from your last 10 to 20 posts for a stable number; a single viral or flopped post will distort a smaller sample.
Your result is rated against published Instagram benchmark bands: under 1% reads low, around 1% to 3% is the broad average range most accounts land in, 3% to 6% is good, and above 6% is excellent. These bands come from public industry benchmark reports, not from our own measurements, and real expectations shift by niche and account size.
Saves and shares are optional inputs because Instagram only shows them to the account owner. Including them raises your rate slightly and gives a more complete picture; leaving them out keeps your number comparable with tools that only count likes and comments.
Bigger accounts almost always show lower percentage rates: reach grows faster than the core audience that interacts. That is why a 100k-follower account at 2% can be performing better than a 5k account at 4%, and why you should compare against accounts of similar size in your niche.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
Published benchmark bands put the broad Instagram average around 1% to 3% of followers. Around 3% to 6% is good, and anything above 6% is excellent. Under 1% usually means content is not resonating with the current audience or the audience is partly inactive.
How do I find my average likes and comments?
Open your last 10 to 20 posts (skip pinned and boosted ones), add up the likes, and divide by the number of posts. Do the same for comments. Instagram's built-in insights can also show these averages if you have a professional account.
Should I count saves and shares?
If you can see them in your insights, yes: they are strong quality signals and part of how Instagram evaluates a post. The calculator treats them as optional so you can still compare against tools and reports that only count likes and comments.
Why did my engagement rate drop as I grew?
Percentage engagement almost always falls as followers rise, because a growing audience includes more casual followers. Benchmarks reflect this: small accounts commonly sit at 4% to 6% while large accounts sit near 1% to 2%. Compare yourself to accounts of similar size, not to a global number.
Is my data uploaded or stored?
The numbers you enter are used to compute the result and are not stored. No login or Instagram connection is required; you type the inputs yourself.
