The ratio is simply followers divided by following. Above 1 means more accounts follow you than you follow; below 1 means the reverse. It is one of the oldest at-a-glance credibility heuristics on social platforms because both numbers sit on every public profile.

Context matters more than the number. A new account that follows widely to find its community will read following-heavy and that is fine. The same ratio on an aged account with steady posting can signal follow-for-follow growth, which brands discount.
If you want to move the ratio, growing followers beats mass-unfollowing. Aggressive unfollow sweeps are detectable (and rate-limited) on most platforms, and a sudden following drop against flat followers is its own red flag to anyone who checks history.
